Living My Dream – Week 19

Good Afternoon to all of you, as you can see I had a bit of a problem last night with blogging, but here I am!  I hope to bring you the highlights of my week as the time goes by!

At the moment I’m at Pretoriuskop, the oldest camp in the Kruger National Park.  Its very close (8km) from the Numbi Gate and I love this camp.  Have always been coming here for the last 25 odd years!   Never camping, but always in the huts, bungalows or guesthouses on offer.  Now its a different story as I tow my caravan from camp to camp and have to use the camping facilities.

I arrived here last week Saturday, but always on a move, use the first day to set up camp and get organized.  Early Sunday morning I was on my way!  Took the Voortrekker Road towards Afsaal (A picnic spot where you can either buy food or make your own breakfast/brunch/lunch on a skottelbraai.  As I’m by myself I rather pack a lunch as I never know how long I will be away from camp…all depends on sightings.

First day driving and I was really lucky to find the Cheetah.  I’m told that there are only about 200 in Kruger, so a real lucky start!

Monday lots of Rhino and Buffalo, but as it goes in Kruger, they are always in the bush!  Tuesday I had to go to town for a few things, I buy most of my supplies outside of the park as the shops sell the essentials, some fruit, vegs, meat etc.. but not a big selection!

Wednesday I had a very good day again…came across some lions that took down a buffalo during the night.  Most of the adults had their fill and did as lions do….just sleep all day!  This big male did wander closer, had a bit to eat from what was leftover….and went back to sleep!

With the male out of the way it was time for the cubs… not sure if they were playing rather than eating…still small, although 3 were of the same size and the other 2 a bit bigger.

Wednesday the road took me to Skukuza, the largest of the camps, and also the administration buildings etc in Kruger.  The weather had changed from very hot to cool and most of the animals were hiding from the wind and drizzle…but, I did see a leopard next to the road….

Thursday I went on one of the little loops and continued up the S7 and S3 all the way to Kruger Gate (another entrance gate into Kruger)…came back along the Waterhole road..and here is a pic of a much better Leopard!

Friday was a real cold day in Kruger and not much was happening apart from lots more Rhino’s (White Rhino’s) there are black rhino in Kruger, but you have to be real lucky to see one….maybe I will get my turn soon!  At the moment some of the summer birds have started to return and if you not into watching animals, birding in Kruger is great too!!

Saturday I was getting visitors so I did not go out, but did do birding in camp..had a nice evening with friends and Sunday it was out again….looking for animals… my best sighting of this day was this Wahlberg’s Eagle!!  He was sitting real close and it was nice to get a good shot!!

And with that a great first week at Pretoriuskop came  to an end.

As I’m new to blogging on this site, please let me know how you would like to see this page..are the pics too big…do I show to much, do I talk too much???

Look forward to hearing from you all…and hopefully see you all in Kruger soon!
