The plight of the Bushmen of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) in Botswana has long been in the media limelight thanks to Survival International, the human rights organization. As with so much in life, the issue is far from simple and the 25th May 2007 Survival International Report gives clues as to the dilemma the Government of Botswana faces in this sensitive matter.

Conjure up a marriage between “Out of Africa” style camping and hunter-gatherer game tracking and you get the Great Walk. Taking place in Kenya’s largest national park, Tsavo, the walk covers a comfortable 153 kms in 12 days.
Situated in south eastern Kenya Tsavo is approximately 12,000 km2 and was designated in 1948 by the colonial government. Divided into East and West the boundary between the two sections of the park is formed by the Mombasa-Nairobi highway and the railway line that connects hinterland to the coast.

Well, I’m back from the Great Walk of Africa. It was truly one of those “experiences of a lifetime”. But Clarissa will write a descriptive piece about the Great Walk. I have, as promised, prepared a Google Earth track of the Great Walk (it downloads an eventual 2.2MB target kmz file). Also our photos are here and here. Enjoy.

Ecotourism and “greenwashing” July 14, 2007

Coined in the 1980s, ecological tourism, or ecotourism has been a contested concept. Over the years there have been many definitions and the ensuing academic debates have only served to confirm that there are - or were - great disagreements. We at ecoAfrica believe in ecotourism and what it attempts to achieve, but only in so far as it represents a travel ethic as opposed to being a market segment or yet another tourism niche.
“Greenwashing ” is what happens when marketeers appropriate the concept. Travel simply has to have some proximity to “nature” or marketing materials contain a few strategically placed “eco” prefixes for it be passed off as “ecotourism”. Galling examples of greenwashing are the many golf “eco estates” that are all the vogue in South Africa at the moment.
