Camping under the stars in the Okavango June 6, 2007

Camp under the stars, get soaked by the spray of the spectacular Victoria Falls, Sunset on the Zambezi River, Hippos yawning & Elephants swimming in Chobe, A mokoro trip on the Okavango Delta and wild camping – with the cry of the Fish Eagle giving you goose bumps.
Just a few of the sights & sounds that greeted me on my recent 10 day Okavango Experience. Camping is the true way to find your soul in Africa. We had the wonderful opportunity to meet & spend time with the locals from Zambia & Botswana.
In Livingstone ( Zambia) we participated in a local community initiative – a guided cycle ride through the local village. This was an initiative from one of the locals, who used the income earned from the USD25 participants paid, to establish a local school. Our guide – Oliver – was one of the local teachers, who showed us the traditional ways – from building to beer drinking.
During our mokoro trip in the Delta, our polers & local guides kept us company, and took care of our domestic needs – but they did much more than that – around the camp fire they taught us local games and tested us with riddles. They also took us on game walks, and shared with us their knowledge & love for Africa.
In Africa it is early to bed, and up before sunrise – to ensure you get the most out of your day. One of my best memories is the sun setting on the one side of the delta, while the full moon was rising on the opposite side, and the next morning, when I woke, the moon was facing me, while it was setting, and then we walked into the rising sun.
Although the safari is not very active – you tend to get very lethargic – but being out in the bush is a true inspiration to go home & try to get more out of your life – and this was a feeling shared by all on the safari.
A camping safari is perfect for single travellers – as you meet like-minded people on the trip to share your experiences with. In our group of 5 there was only one couple, the rest were all single.
And although lion & leopard evaded the horizon of our sight – we still had a great African Adventure!
